The Camera Work Gallery in Berlin is pleased to present an exhibition of works by Nick Brandt, opening on 14 May 2016. 'Inherit the Dust' is Brandt's fourth major solo exhibition at Camera Work. It encompasses never-exhibited works from the photographer's most recent series, completed in 2015.
For this new project, Brandt (born 1966) captured breathtaking large-format panoramas which illustrate the effects of human civilisation on the landscapes of the African continent – areas that were once inhabited by wildlife such as zebras, rhinos and gorillas.
Based on a complex artistic concept, Brandt constructed life-size panels of animals which he subsequently installed in environments marked by urban destruction. The viewer is confronted with a herd of elephants in front of modern industrial factories, or lions on landfill sites as vast as the eye can see. The epic effect of these works is deeply moving.
