Reflection

Share:

On 11 March, the exhibition 'Reflection' by Axel Hütte opens at the Daniel Marzona Gallery. It will be the first time the venue is hosting an exhibition of the artist's work. Since the late nineties, Hütte has continuously sought out ways eradicate a sense of familiarity from the photographic image. How is it possible to create images that are disconcerting while still remaining within the framework of our visual expectations – to ensure that they do not seem unrealistic to the viewer but still manage to perturb? In his photographs, Hütte consciously depicts incidental, often unspectacular locations, places which are devoid of people and the traces of our modern lives. As a result, it is not the subject, but the photograph itself and its archetypal structures that become the centre of the viewer's attention.

Axel Hütte, born 1951 in Essen, Germany, studied photography under Bernd Becher at the Dusseldorf Arts Academy (1973-80). His work has been represented in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions, as well as festivals and biennial events.
