Between Realism and Orchestration

Share:

From September 10, 2022 to January 1, 2023, Berlin’s Center for Contemporary Art (ZAK) – located in the historical Spandau Citadel fortress – presents the group exhibition ‘State of Emergency. Polish Photographic Art Today’. The showcase features works by 26 photo artists who either grew up or started their careers in post-communist Poland – many of whom are little or entirely unknown in Germany. Their images paint an immediate and authentic picture of an anarchic, diverse, queer, audacious country, and also shine a light on those who struggled to find their place in a new world after the fall of the Iron Curtain.

‘State of Emergency’ tells fascinating stories that are often absent from the major narratives about modern-day Poland. The featured works are characterised by a compelling tension between realism and orchestration, immediate proximity and artistic detachment.

Rafał Milach’s photographs of the Abortion Ban Protests in late 2020, and Aneta Grzeszykowska’s experimental explorations of her own body, are among this eclectic selection of outstanding works.
