August Sander Prize

December 17, 2017

A new award for portrait photography is to be launched in 2018: established by Ulla Bartenbach and Prof. Dr. Kurt Bartenbach in collaboration with Photographic Collection/SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne, the biennial August Sander Prize is endowed with 5,000 euros.
In addition to receiving a sum of money, the winner is also offered an exhibition at the Photographic Collection/SK Stiftung Kultur. The aim behind the award is to support young contemporary artists pursuing an objective-conceptual approach to photography. The contest is open to German as well as international participants up to the age of 40.

The Photographic Collection/SK Stiftung Kultur owns the world’s largest collection of original works by August Sanders (1876–1964), who has been described as "the most important German portrait photographer of the early twentieth century.” In reflection of the artist’s work, entries for the August Sanders Prize should be predominantly dedicated to the portrait genre.

Submissions are open until 28 February 2018. The awards ceremony takes place at the Photographic Collection in September 2018.
