Trust and Respect

November 18, 2021

Anja Niemi’s exhibition ‘The Rider Vol. 1’ continues at the Ravestijn Gallery in Amsterdam until January 22, 2022.
We see a woman standing, facing away from the viewer, wearing classic black dressage jodhpurs. At the nape of her neck, her locks protrude from her helmet, neatly gathered into a hairnet. The sleeves of her white blouse are rolled up, torso slightly arched, shoulders together. Her leather riding boots are securely grounded beneath her, preparing to confront the dark void ahead.

‘The Rider Vol. 1’ is an ideological progression from Anja Niemi's previous series, ‘The Blow’ (2019), which centres around a female boxer. In her latest project – on show at the Ravestijn Gallery until January 22, 2022 – the artist recreates her protagonist’s struggles in the form of a rider and her horse: together, they are on a journey that requires perseverance and the suspension of fear. They are one – bonded by mutual trust, respect, and a willingness to understand each other.
