A Certain Strangeness

July 28, 2022

From July 28 to October 5, 2022, the Ernst Leitz Museum in Wetzlar presents an extensive retrospective by British musician and photographer, Andy Summers.
His guitar riffs are legendary, and as a brilliant musician and composer he helped coin the unmistakeable sound of The Police. But Andy Summers, born 1942 in Blackpool/UK, is a creative multi-talent who has also long made waves as a photographer. In his mind, music and photography perfectly complement each other: “The qualities I’m looking for are musical. That’s the condition. You think of music in terms of harmony, line, form, volume, stillness, dynamism… I think all those concepts translate into photography.”

From July 28 to October 5, 2022, the Ernst Leitz Museum presents fascinating insights into the artist’s oeuvre. Comprising around 150 images, the showcase features concentrated, often pared-down compositions, captured during world-wide travels in South America, the US and Japan. A second series of images is closely linked to Summers’ experiences on tour with the The Police. After the dissolution of the band in 2008, Summers continued his career as a solo musician, whilst also placing a major focus on photography. In addition to the Leica M4-2, he also began working with the Leica M Monochrom. Audiences are now able to explore the photographer’s multi-faceted, powerful yet sensitive work in all of its richness.
