Andreas Jorns’ large-format, black and white images are comprised of illusory scenes and fascinating compositions that take viewers into previously unimagined worlds. Dreams are, in themselves, a tool of communication, a language without grammar, syntax or phonetics. The photographer has an inimitable ability to capture the nuances of this ethereal language and make it tangible for the observer. Together with his protagonist, Anna Röttger, he manages to balance two states of consciousness – waking and dreaming – and to convey the subtle messages within this symbiosis through mesmerising images.
Anna – essentially the physical incarnation of these ‘lucid dreams’ – navigates the journey into the unknown with self-assurance and authenticity. The deep trust inherent in the artistic collaboration between photographer and model gives rise to images that break through the boundaries of the captured realities, and add a dimension that reflects the complexity and multi-layered nature of our dreams.
