Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum celebrates the work of Bertien van Manen (born 1942 in Den Haag) with the exhibition ‘Bertien van Manen & Friends: Beyond the Image’. The showcase marks the first major survey of the documentary photographer’s oeuvre worldwide. Van Manen started her career as a fashion photographer, before Robert Frank’s monograph ‘The Americans’ (1958) inspired her to pursue a social documentary approach.
The presentation, which was curated in close collaboration with the artist, encompasses a total of 11 series from various points in van Manen’s career. These are placed in a dialogue with works by 14 contemporary photographers – including Nan Goldin, Boris Mikhailov and Rineke Dijkstra – who, like van Manen, tend to find their subjects in their immediate surroundings and revisit them over prolonged periods of time.
