Alec Soth in Munich

July 5, 2022

The exhibition ‘Gathered Leaves’ with works by Alec Soth continues at the VKB Art Foyer in Munich until July 24, 2022.
The exhibition ‘Alec Soth. Gathered Leaves’ surveys two decades of the American photographer’s oeuvre. The showcase, which is displayed at the VKB Art Foyer in Munich until July 24, 2022, encompasses five major series: ‘Sleeping by the Mississippi’ (2004), ‘Niagara’ (2006), ‘Broken Manual’ (2010), ‘Songbook’ (2014) and the artist’s most recent project, ‘A Pound of Pictures’ (2022).

The landscapes of his home country serve as the setting for Soth’s poetic studies of American life. Characteristic values, such as independence, freedom, spirituality and individuality, are explored in the form of everyday scenes – whereby the essence of those he portrays always remains the central focus point.

A skilled observer, Soth is interested in the personal story behind the visual narrative: human emotions, individual fates, secret yearnings. His aesthetic approach is as simple as it is profound: “To me, the most beautiful thing is vulnerability."

Alec Soth (b. 1969) is based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. He describes himself as a visual artist, Magnum photojournalist, blogger, self-publisher, Instagrammer and educator. Along with numerous other grants and prizes, Soth was awarded the Guggenheim-Fellowship in 2013. His work is represented in major collections around the world.
