An incredible promise

York Hovest

December 22, 2014

In 2011, when he took portrait pictures of the Dalai Lama who was visiting Germany, something went click. Hovest promised His Holiness to produce a photo book that captured the beauty of Tibet, to draw attention to the grievances in the country.
In August, 2011, thanks to the Association Freunde für ein Freund (Friends for a Friend) – an initiative in support of Tibetan culture – Hovest had the opportunity to portray the Dalai Lama in Wiesbaden during a visit to Germany. The job was to become a turning point in his life. “I asked myself what I could do for the Dalai Lama and his country from my perspective.” So Hovest wrote a letter to His Holiness: “I would like to travel to your homeland and capture its laughter and its tears; and then return with a message to the world.”

Equipped with an S2 and under exhausting conditions where he had to battle with many obstacles, Hovest managed to produce a powerful reportage with breathtaking images.

A love and respect for the beauty of our planet are the driving forces behind York Hovest's projects. As an investigative photographer, he always tries to show both sides of the coin: pictures of untouched nature and hidden cultures stand in contrast to all the exploitation and destruction that humanity is capable of. Hovest wants to sharpen people's awareness and draw their attention to the important subjects of our times. His tool is the camera, and his feelings take care of all the rest. More
