Fetish Ballad

January 5, 2016

After exploring Blackitude and bringing museum art into a new context in Back to the Museum, French photographer Maglau has undertaken a journey through the world of fetishism, visiting relevant clubs in Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Paris and Tokyo.
There is little that can not be turned into a fetish, which explains the diversity of the world of fetishists. Maglau explored their meeting points on a number of continents, for his Fetish Ballad series. His severely composed, raw black and white pictures reveal the obsessions with latex and leather, tattoos and bonds, just to mention a few; at the same time, they never appear as a denunciation of practices that are often considered ‘deviant’. The photograph points to the old master of bondage photography, Rick Castro, who in a recent interview with Dazed magazine said, “Fetish is the exploration of sex as art (…). I feel that the 21st century is all about fetish.” In the spring of 2016 Verlag Kettler will publish Fetish Ballad as a book with the same title.
