"I peered through the fence like a voyeur, or like a child at Disneyland, and I took this picture while a coat of fluoride dust settled over me and the camera."
"This is the first picture of a factory I’ve taken with my Leica and a 35mm lens. It’s the site of the Fluorsid Group in Cagliari, and their business purpose is to process fluoride. I’ve often walked by this factory, and I was always fascinated by its white smoke and the soft colours of the steel construction. These are all elements that I find are like black and white in colour.

I would have taken the picture with my original camera, but the lens didn’t fit through the mesh of the fence. The Leica with the 35mm did fit. I peered through the fence like a voyeur, or like a child at Disneyland, and I took this picture while a coat of fluoride dust settled over me and the camera. It’s not really an industrial landscape like other pictures from my Steel Life series, but it does have a connection to my favourite raw material: steel.“
