“I photographed The Afghans project in the autumn of 2014. The focus of this series is on showing the Afghan population in Mazar-e-Sharif, northern Afghanistan, where the German army is stationed, and how the German presence has impacted the lives of people there over the past ten years. While I was portraying a baker from the opposite side of the street, my Afghan producer, Jawed, had to repeatedly explain to people what we were doing. Within a short period of time, increasing numbers of people who were, in fact, out getting supplies or doing their day’s work, stopped to watch. Seeing a group of foreigners working on a photo shoot made them so curious that they wanted to find out more.”

Born in Homberg/Efze in 1973, Umbach graduated as a Communications Designer from the FH Darmstadt in 1999. He moved to New York in 1997, while still studying.in 1997. His photographic emphasis lies of editorial portraits (British Vogue, New Yorker, brand eins, London Telegraph Magazine) and commercial productions for IBM, Mercedes Benz, and American Express. Since 2009, Umbach has been living in Hamburg and in New York. More
