Birte Kaufman captured this image while working on her long-term project about the Irish minority group known as the Travellers, Pavee or Itinerants. These wandering folk are probably of Irish origins, but live secluded from most of society. Since 2011, Kaufman has been to Ireland many times to document the unromanticized story of the Travellers daily life.

“This picture was taken at the Ballinasloe Horse Fair – the largest of its kind in Ireland. While the men lose themselves in the world of horses, the women take particular care of their appearance. They prepare themselves long before the fair begins: self-tanning, false eyelashes, nail polish – anything goes. And it is never too late to apply the curlers.“
