Mirror

Bret Curry & Nicholas Kalikow

May 19, 2023

The fusion of photography and filmmaking has given birth to an intriguing and imaginative project titled Mirror.
Director and film producer Nicholas Kalikow is teaming up with cinematographer Bret Curry, to give a new and refreshing spin to the graphic novel genre, by using photos instead of traditional drawn images.

“This still is part 1 of a series Bret and I are doing; it’s called Mirror.

The series is a Twilight Zone-style, Sci-Fi photo project with a linear narrative; one that’s heavily influenced by comics and graphic novels. The depicted scene is a reflective moment for our characters, one where they come to realize that time and reality are not what they thought they were. Our producer, Cameron Trejo, found this location for us; originally we had another spot in mind, but this location was too good to pass up!

For the project, I worked like a cinema director for the placement of the subjects, while Bret worked like a cinematographer and set the lighting. He also fired this very shot on my SL2. This project is a lot of fun for us to work on, because it gives us the satisfaction of making a film, but with only a five person crew (including Bret and myself) — it’s also a chance for us to combine our passions for both filmmaking and photography into one exercise."
