A new location for Leica photography in the heart of North Rhine Westphalia: The Leica Gallery NRW opened its doors for the first time on September 16. In the future, this venue will host changing exhibitions – from classics all the way to contemporary photography. The launch featured the work of Lars Beusker, owner of the Leica Gallery NRW, himself, with the exhibition Was bleibt? Monochrom ( What remains? Monochrome ) – made up of five project series focussing on portraits.
Herr Beusker, congratulations on the opening of the Gallery NRW! What made you decide on Oelde as the location for this venue?
I live and work here. What’s more, Oelde is strategically very well located half way between Hanover and Düsseldorf, and in the middle of the Dortmund-Münster-Bielefeld triangle – all three place have photography schools.
Can you describe the space?
The Leica Gallery NRW is a faithful homage to the 1929 World Exhibition motto: Form follows function – based on the architecture of Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion. The glass and wood structure has an interior area of 200 square metres, a large terrace and a pool, as well as a Leica Boutique where customers can purchase selected Leica products and accessories.
You’re launching it with an exhibition of your own work. Can you explain the theme briefly?
It’s made up in part of large-format, black and white shots of top models like Nadja Auermann, important artists such as Peter Lindbergh, Moroccan farmers and happy dandies from around the world. 50, brilliant fine-art prints are on display at the Leica Gallery NRW up until Januaty 13, 2018.
As director of the gallery, what are you looking forward to most?
In particular, I’m looking forward to a diversity of interesting material by and with exciting photographers, who are fully convinced of their work.

Lars Beusker+-
Lars Beusker is a fashion, lifestyle and still-life photographer. As a result of his numerous assignments for international clients such as SØR, Gant, Wellensteyn, Louis Copeland, Emanuel Berg, L’Oréal and Müller Maßmanufaktur, the 44 year-old has developed techniques and processes that allow him to get very close to the content in his own personal work. While his commercial work in primarily carried out with a digital workflow, he considers a return to the analogue roots of photography beneficial for his personal projects. In the process, he is attracted by the challenge to “produce a coherent image” with few pictures. More
