Der US-amerikanische Fotograf Mike Disfarmer (1884–1959) erstellte zwischen 1915 und 1959 Porträts von Bewohnern seiner Heimatstadt Heber Springs, einer Kleinstadt in der Nähe von Arkansas. Erst nach seinem Tod wurde die internationale Fachwelt auf sein Werk aufmerksam. Es bildet die Grundlage für klassische wie typische Porträtfotografie aus dieser Ära. Foam Amsterdam zeigt mit „Disfarmer – The Vintage Prints“ 182 Vintage Prints, darunter eine Vielzahl bisher unveröffentlichter kleinformatiger Abzüge.
Disfarmers Bilder zeichnen sich durch eine klare Sprache aus. Er positionierte seine Modelle vor einem simplen Hintergrund, mit direktem Blick in die Kamera. Das Resultat ist ein auf das Individuum abgestimmter Fokus, der in keiner Weise vom jeweiligen Arrangement abgelenkt wird.
