During 2014 and 2015, thousands of New Yorkers under the slogan "Black Lives Matter" protested in the streets of Manhattan, demanding justice for Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Akai Gurley and all victims of police violence against African Americans in the United States, where racial segregation and discrimination remained by law in some states until less than 50 years ago. #BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted for his crime, and dead 17-year old Trayvon was post-humously placed on trial for his own murder. Some of the pictures evoke images from the past, like the protesters intertwining their arms during the march in January 2015 commemorating the birthday of Martin Luther King, that takes our mind to the historic march from Selma to Montgomery on march 25th 1965 against the lack of voting rights of African Americans and makes us wander how much has really changed. According to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People African Americans are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of whites.
