From May 23, 2020, the Thomas Schulte Gallery in Berlin presents the charitable project ‘An Ongoing Collection of Screengrabs with Reassuring Subtitles’. The 400 showcased images were selected from a vast archive of screenshots the American artist has been collating since 2015.
When McCollum watches movies and TV shows on his laptop, he takes screenshots of scenes in which a distressed character receives emotional encouragement or support – with the subtitles showing phrases such as, “It will be ok" or, “Don't worry, Babe.”
The screenshots are then printed on canvas in a 22.5 x 40 x 2cm format. Each framed print is a one-off piece of art, and can now be purchased for € 700 excl. VAT.
Thirty percent of all proceeds will be donated to two acclaimed art institutions as a show of support in these difficult times: the c/o Berlin Foundation and the ICA Miami, which has been forced to close its current McCollum retrospective to the public.
