Bieke Depoorter’s work is borne from the connection she establishes with her subjects, and her position as a photographer within these relationships. With this comprehensive showcase, comprised of five series created in the years from 2015 to 2019, the NRW Forum celebrates an exciting artist at a pivotal point in her career.
In the five showcased series – some of which are still ongoing – the Belgium Magnum photographer (b. 1986) addresses contemporary social issues, whilst examining both her role as a photographer and the limitations of her medium. The starting point of her explorations are (often arbitrary) encounters with people who she subsequently accompanies for prolonged periods of time – sometimes years. In the course of her projects, she poses questions as to whether it is possible to truly capture a person through the medium of photography – and illustrates how such a venture can become a genuinely collaborative effort.
Her travels have taken Depoorter to many different parts of the world, including Egypt, France, Norway, the USA and Lebanon.
