Familiarity with Things

July 12, 2019

The exhibition ‘Familiarity with Things’ with works by Aenne Biermann will be on show at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich from 12 July to 13 October 2019.

For the self-taught photographer Aenne Biermann (1898 – 1933), the camera was a means of relating to her immediate surroundings. From the mid-1920s onwards, she dedicated herself to capturing everyday situations from unusual perspectives. Even though Aenne Biermann worked in relative isolation from the avant-garde movements that took place in larger cities, her work was represented in all major modernist-photography exhibitions from 1929 onwards. Her oeuvre, created within just a few short years – Aenne Biermann passed away following an illness in 1933 – is now regarded as one of the most important contributions to the New Vision and New Objectivity movements.

In 1931, the German publication Das Magazin wrote: “Here is a photographer who shows everyday objects in an entirely new light. The much-revered New Objectivity becomes entirely un-daunting at her tender hand, as she gently touches upon the things she sees.”
