As Official Photography Partner of Photokina 2016, Leica will be staging the Masters of Photography exhibition at the world photography trade fair.

Every day up until the opening of the Photokina on September 20, we will be presenting one of the pictures series. Today it is The Afghans by Jens Umbach.

Jens Umbach has been working in Afghanistan since 2010, where he initially photographed members of the German Army. Since the official mission concluded at the end of 2014, only a small contingent of German soldiers remain stationed in the north of Afghanistan. Inhabitants in the Mazar-e-Sharif district lived right next to the German Camp Marmal for over ten years. For his The Afghans series, Umbach next travelled in the region surrounding the camp. Like with his first series, the images are defined by a neutral background and the direct eye contact with those being portrayed. Learn more about Umbach’s latest project in LFI 7/2016, available as of 20 September.
