The exhibition 'Taking Stock of Power. Another View of the Berlin Wall' marks the completion of an extensive long-term project by Annett Gröschner and Arwed Messmer. In 1995, the two artists opened a cardboard box while researching at the Intermediary Military Archives in Potsdam. What they discovered were rolls upon rolls of 35mm film, containing photographs taken by East-German border guards in approximately 1966. Little did they know that this material would occupy them for a long time to come.
Over the course of years, photographer Arwed Messmer compiled the single photographs into 700 panoramas depicting the entire course of the wall around West Berlin. Writer Annett Gröschner has condensed the written protocols of the border guards into literary captions.
The project was supported by the Federal Cultural Foundation and the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, and was created in cooperation with the German Federal Archives.
