The exhibition ‘Faraway Focus – Photographers Go Travelling’ opens at the Berlinische Galerie on 18 May at 19.00. The show continues until 11 September 2017.

Travel has been a leading theme in photography for over 100 years. The Colonial expansion and emerging tourism of the 19th century inspired photographers to discover the world and explore the unknown. In the 1920s, photographers began to take an artistic approach to the cultural, political and social characteristics of foreign lands.

In this exhibition, 189 images by 17 famous and lesser-known photographers represent the key eras and styles of travel photography throughout history – illustrating how our visual approach to the unfamiliar has evolved from Colonial times to today’s age of globalisation. The photographs on display include works by Erich Salomon, Thomas Hoepker, Evelyn Richter, Tobias Zielony, Heidi Specker and Sven Johne.
