Starting February 17, the FOMU Photo Museum in Antwerp is presenting Gathered Leaves, an exhibition of works by Alex Soth. It is the Magnum photographer’s first solo exhibition in Belgium, and runs up until June 4, 2017.

Gathered Leaves includes photographs from Soth’s Sleeping by the Mississippi (2004), Niagara (2006), Broken Manual (2010) and Songbook (2014) series, offering a comprehensive overview of his oeuvre. Known for his lyrical style of documentary photography, the American photographer focussed time and again on his homeland. “Our vision of America is so shaped by television and movies. All we see are Hollywood starlets and New York cops. We sometimes forget that there are whole other lives being lived in the middle of America. And some of these lives are really inspiring,” Soth said, explaining his motivation.

Soth was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1969, and has been a full member of Magnum Photos since 2008. Soth was part of the 10×10 project celebrating the 100 year jubilee of the 35mm Leica camera.
