A birthday gift for the Städel Museum

October 9, 2015

In celebration of its 200-year jubilee, the Städel Museum in Frankfurt is receiving "Untitled (Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman)" as a gift from the DZ Bank art collection.
On the occasion of the Städel Museum's 200-year jubilee, the DZ Bank is giving the Frankfurt institution a generous gift from its renowned contemporary photography art collection: the joint work by Richard Prince (*1949) and Cindy Sherman (*1954), "Untitled (Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman)" (1980) from the "Double Portrait" series, will be on display immediately in the Städel's contemporary art section.

Double portrait contributing to the gender debate
Produced in 1980, the piece of art is a portrait diptych of the two US artists, photographed in the same pose, wearing the same suit and wig. It is one of the earliest artistic contributions to the emerging gender debate of the eighties, and a central piece in Sherman's oeuvre, who focuses on essential questions of identity, role playing and sexuality.

The work complements an already existing selection of contemporary photography that came to the Städel from the DZ Bank art collection in 2008, at the time when the building was being expanded. The current hand-over marks another high point in the long-standing partnership between the Städel Museum and the DZ Bank.
